Student Activism

Student Activism is an important aspect in the Learning Community framework. College and university students are encouraged to involve themselves in the community beyond their work as tutors and to take part in local Steering Committee sessions and its campaigns. Throughout the year they participate in five communal workshops and two, two-day, national seminars that provide them with tools and knowledge for educational, socio-political, and communal work. These seminars develop socio-political awareness, which reflects back onto the students' work in their communities. Furthermore, they provide a unique opportunity to meet with students working in the other Mahapach-Taghir communities, learn about the specific challenges they are facing, identify shared interests and values, and to establish channels for future cooperation and solidarity.

Students active in Mahapach-Taghir and in the Learning Communities become familiar with the working practices and the dilemmas that characterize Israeli civic society. Through exposure, involvement and participation, students are encouraged to become social activists in the organization and in Israeli society as a whole. Indeed, many former students who volunteered in Mahapach-Taghir in the past are activists in civic society today. We are proud of our alumni, who are involved in many of the organizations responsible for reshaping Israeli society in the fields of education, environment, social justice and human rights.
