Kattamonim

The Kattamonim community is located south of Jerusalem. Kattamonim is a very big and very wide neighborhood, with a wide range of socio-economic classes, religions and ethnic groups. Our community is located in the area of Kattamonim, population with equivalent characteristics. Its limits are the streets Pat in the east, Golomb in the north and San Martin in the southwest. It includes about 7000 residents: men, women and children.

At the end of the ‘50s, Gonen neighborhood was established. Kattamon Tet was established at the beginning of the ‘60s (it was built more crowded than the other neighborhoods-4-5 floor per building). Today, both neighborhoods together are called Kattamonim.

The community suffers from a low socio-economic class, which has increased over the years because of the tough economic situation. In the `50s, migrants from Arab countries populated the neighborhood, and they still constitute most of the residents. In the `90s, migrants from the USSR arrived, and today only the elderly people remain. There are a lot of migrants from Ethiopia too.

The learning community helps 60 children and youth between the ages of 7-18. About 25 students are active in the community, most of them from the Hebrew University. They are responsible forday activity coordination, two hours of personal studying with emphasis on reinforcement of the tough subjects and completing homework, and two hours of social activity in groups.

The learning community is active 4 days a week between 16:00-21:00. In the afternoon activity framework, we emphasize alternative learning, personal contact and political work with children and youth. This year we will highlight identity and racism.

The contact with the parents is continuous, by phone, by coffee meetings and by their participation in the activities. In addition, there is a parent committee (steering committee) that his goal is to lead changes and struggles in the neighborhood.

If you want to participate with us you are invited to contact Ana, the community coordinator: 054-7608122.
