The Kasdor community is located in the city of Sderot, and it includes about 100 men, women and children. Sderot was established in1953, first as a transitional camp for migrants from Kurdistan and Iran, but some of the camp people were housed in buildings already at 1954. It got its name because of the eucalyptus boulevards that was planted there.
During the ‘50s, Sderot absorbed migrants from Morocco and Romania. At 1958 it was recognized as a local council, and at the ‘90s it absorbed migrants from Ethiopia and from the USSR. It was recognized as a city at 1996.
The community is placed in Ben Gurion neighborhood and characterized with migrants from the USSR. Most of the neighborhood residents work at factories in the area.
70 children in the ages of 6-15 participate at the learning community. About 25 academic students, mostly from Sapir and Ashkelon Colleges are active in the community. Their responsibilities include daily activity supervision, personal tutoring and group tutoring.
The learning community is active 4 days a week at 16:00-21:00. There are social and educational activities for children and youth in the framework of the afternoon activities.
During the last few years, we have not had a building for our community, and we have been working to change this. In Kasdor neighborhood there is only one building allocated to youth activity. The neighborhood school “Rabin” was closed 3 years ago, and there are no other activities for children.
At May 2009, the community took a place in the struggle against the closing of Hosen Center. The center looks after 700 residents, out of them 500 kids, that needs a long time treatment and not only at an emergency. In the end of the struggle, the mayor, David Buskila, declared that the center will not get closed till the end of 2010.
